Canoe Paddles
Looking for collaborators for small scale production runs of canoeing paddles, and other timber work projects.
Made from selected, quarter sawn, solid Australian Blackwood, sanded down to 320 grit, treated with natural oils, we currently make paddles in three shapes:
The long paddle is shaped thin and slender for efficient use on open still water, and for optional stand up paddling. It has a long eliptical shaft for directional strength and a thin, narrow, long blade for paddling a decent amount of water while remaining slender throughout the paddle stroke.
The white water paddle is shaped for strength and paddling larger masses of water quickly. The blade is broad and thick to endure striking rocks, and the shaft is tapered thick to give maximum strength and dependability through a full range of strokes in such conditions, as well as working off the gunwale of a canoe.
The light paddle is shaped halfway between the Long Paddle and the White Water Paddle. It is used for easy, long day touring and lighter all round use making it ideal for children. It is light weight, with a blade to paddle an easy amount of water, remaining slender throughout the paddle stroke.
It’s good to own all three of these paddles if you do all forms of canoeing. I carry all three on most longer range river tours.
Maintain your paddle by sanding out any nicks or chips, and regularly oil after use. Suitable oil is linseed, thinned with gum turps, applied in a warm setting for maximum penetration.
