Canvas bumbag, with Black Diamond oval carabiner
A large canvas roll top bumbag, secured with a Black Diamond oval carabiner.
Made from surplus 8 ounce poly/cotton canvas, reclaimed from Australian production excess.
All seams are double stitched and bound with canvas. WW2 surplus, 2 inch cotton webbing is used for the belt, set it for easy repair or replacement. The same webbing is folded over the opening make a structured roll top and stiff fastening loops.
The belt is fastened with a 2 way adjustable, 2 inch plastic clip, entirely replaceable (no stitching to rework).
The roll top is fastened with an aluminium, oval key lock carabiner, made by Black Diamond, typically used in climbing. The roll top can be configured in different ways, depending on use scenario. It can be rolled tight, or lose and used as a carry handle, or open for use as a handbag or dump pouch. Add a sling to the carabiner, tying the other end to one. of the roll top loops, and it becomes a shoulder bag.
I developed this bag in various iterations, seeking the simplest design with the maximum versatility.
The roll top is the most secure and versatile opening, with no zips to fail, expandable size and easy reconfiguration for different carries.
The carrying capacity is large or small. It can fit a change of clothes with woollens, or a waxed canvas shell layer and sweater, or a range of handy grab items and a sheepskin vest.
The bag can be worn on the waist, front or back, over the shoulder, or carried in the hand for a quick round of shopping.
When worn on the waist and turned to the back, it is a secure carry for riding, skiing, climbing and most other activities. It is useful for supporting the weight of the backsack too.
When worn on the front or side it is a useful dump pouch while carrying a larger back pack.
When clipped with the roll top loose or open, it can be carried by hand with very quick access, such as toiletries and towel to the onsen, or a quick collection of groceries.
The bumbag, backsack and kit bag are my first round of products outside of clothing, and are the beginning of a full range of equipment for real life.
