Deschooling Society

Buy from Amazon.au

A potent critique of our institutionalised and professionalised culture, more relevant today than in 1976. I've read all of Ivan Illich’s work, but Deschooling Society is essential.

Tools for Conviviality

Buy from Amazon.au

This book deeply informs everything I do at Peak Oil Company. It offers a way for appreciating tools and technology based on how much they enhance rather than displace human relations

The Party’s Over - Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies

Buy from Amazon.au

If you’re skeptical that we’re running out of oil, or wondering if all modern wars are oil wars? This book is worth knowing about.

Lost World of the Kimberley

Buy from Amazon.au

I read this book on Kindle, while walking 300km across the North West Kimberley wilderness. It is a fascinating and controversial look at the unique and ancient cultural legacy of the region.

The Life and Adventures of William Buckley

Buy from Amazon.au

This incredible story is a rare account of Indigenous Australian life 30 years prior to dealing with settlers on Melbourne. William Buckley escaped when an earlier attempt at settlement failed. It would be 30 years later, when another English settlement found Buckley and his story became known.

The Rabbits

Buy from Amazon.au

The Rabbits was one of his early successes, but every book Shaun Tan has put out is well worth having. Dreamy, atmospheric, provocative and thoughtful works of art. All his books and illustrations are for adults and kids alike.

A Pattern Language

Buy from Amazon.au

A profound and immense book, to guide you in thinking about and designing rooms, buildings, gardens, parks, towns, cities and networks. An important reference text to keep in every home.

This is a fascinating and significant book, telling the story of Cyrus The Great, who established the Persian Empire. Xenophon’s account of Cyrus is believed to have set down the ideological foundations of Western civilisation. An important book to know, and a thrilling read.

Portable wood stove/heater

Buy on Amazon.au

We only have the Winnerwell Fold, but this design looks slightly better and for a cheaper price.

Having a portable fire box like this is a good idea. You can avoid leaving a fire scar on the ground, you can burn wood more efficiently, and you can cook on it without blacking your pots.

Very light weight, and with the removable top, it can be used as a fire pit and a charcoal griller. With the flu pipe section, you can heat up a tent space effectively.

We use ours canoe camping and over nighters where weight is a factor.

A very versatile and useful tool to have.

Solostove Titan

Buy from Amazon.au

We use the Solostove Titan everywhere we go. Fast & easy, no scar on the ground, significantly reduced risk of accidental fire, small wood fuel everywhere, produces little to no smoke. It will change the way you think about fire and camp cooking. It’s an excellent stove.

Go Pro 360 Max

Buy on Amazon.au

Spherical (360 degree) videography has lots of creative potential. I use one on all our trips. Record everything, compose later. The battery life is a bit short, so I bought a second with a dual charger. I really enjoy editing the footage from this camera

Rode Wireless Go 2

Buy from Amazon.au

This wireless microphone set is a very effective way to improve audio recordings. We use them on our more involved video work.
